Today Is the Day the Lord Has Made (A Deeper Dive into Scripture)

Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

In Exodus 3:14, God said to Moses, “I am Who I Am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I Am has sent me to you.”  I Am who I Am - Meaning “I ever shall be the same that I am today." This signifies God as eternal and unchangeable.

Today is the day the Lord has made.  He made today and everyday out of His consistent self, out of His consistent Love, grace mercy.  For each day He makes, He intends the same purpose, to bring us to Him so that we may believe in His son and believe in His sacrifice so that we may join Him in His kingdom.  His purpose in our day is eternal and unchangeable.

To prepare something has the connotation that this day has not just occurred, but rather, thought was put into today so that today is put into proper condition or readiness for us.   God has put forethought into today for certain occurrences to happen in order for us to see Him, know of Him, be Him to others, to grow in our understanding of Him and grow closer to Him.   He has worked to prepare our day for what we need it to be.  Do we see that each day?  Do we recognize the work He has put into our individual days.  Are we thankful for those days…or attentive to what they bring?

To rejoice is a strong, violent emotion, something strong from within us, not a little “yea!”  David is talking about expressing a great, joyful feeling.  “We will rejoice” stated as an affirmative action, not “will we rejoice?” as if it is a choice not to do so.  When we recognize the gifts and blessings God gives us each day in perspective to Who He is and significance of the gifts He gives, we have no other response but to rejoice.

Whew!   Breaking this scripture down sure gives us a clearer picture!

This day has been made or prepared and given to us by our God, individually crafted for our needs by His great love for us.  Even on days that don’t seem to go so well for us, there is God, who prepared that day with thought and intention.  And because He is the one that prepared the day, He is the one to carry us through it.   Sometimes, it takes a lot of our seeking Him to see and understand His goodness.   Our natural tendencies are to focus on a worldly perspective and on the here and now rather than His eternal perspective.  And when we do, we don’t always feel like rejoicing.  But if we are honest with God about our fears and concerns, and sit  quietly to seek Him, He will allow us to see his goodness…and we will rejoice.
